A Personal Testimonial:
I have been operating in the domain industry since early 2004. I happened upon a domaining forum while doing research for a personal website I was attempting to create and within a few days found myself buying up domains using droplists and scavenging the low hanging fruit from some of the more seasoned domainers. I was spending so much time scanning those droplists I would occasionally have to pull myself away because I was hungry, thirsty, or dizzy from scrolling for hours on end. You may know how it feels. Anyhow, I knew I wanted to build a huge portfolio, with the odd gem thrown in - so I could resell it a couple years down the road for 30 times what I paid for it. That’s what I thought, and I played that game for about a year. It was a lot of hard work and a year into it realized I wasn’t making much with my portfolio. Even the top domains I had were not covering the registration fees! My portfolio was too small and the parking services just did not have the return I needed. So I changed gears…
I sold off some names, to make my money back, and threw everything I had into one or two really good traffic domains. Then I started building them out. Building them out, you may ask? Instead of parking the page I found a host and built my own site. I created all the content, setup an Adsense account with Google, and started working on driving the search engines to my sites. Yes, it was more work then handling the portfolio, but the returns were immediate with the direct advertising contracts. Furthermore, the unique content helped me get noticed in the SE’s for keywords related to the site and traffic started to pickup considerably. In one case I had a premium .net with 10 uniques a day when I bought it and now it gets 100 uniques a day. No way to get that with a parked page. On another domain, a premium .com I purchased from a large brokerage house where the domain was parked for six months, the results are also undeniably positive. Without going into exact numbers, it made between 3-5 dollars per day, parked. A year later, not counting affiliate or direct advertising dollars the same domain brings in 30+ dollars per day (PPC).
Now I am making money and I can feel the tipping point.
I recently sat on a Web 2.0 panel at the Domain Roundtable Conference in Seattle (2007) and it was here I realized there was a huge gap in the domain industry for premium domain name holders. The thirst for domain development was evident again at TRAFFIC East in Miami, where I sat on a panel focused on "how to optimize your domain names..." through methods other than parking. Parking is not the answer. What domain investors need are domain name managers who can help develop their names, build them out, and generate the most amount of profit possible through development.
If you have premium domains that are parked I strongly recommend building them out, even just a one-pager with good content people are looking for will boost your traffic and get you noticed by the SE’s. If you want to do it, but don’t want to manage it or have a little more money to spend up front rather than time, then please consider our services. I believe you will be happy with the results. If you are not happy, we will help you find a parking service that best fits your domain.
Our goal at BuildsOut.com is to create an environment much like an "Exurb." An exurb is classically defined as an urban residential complex located in more rural areas with quick and easy access to the urban centers of activity. We envision taking on a small to medium number of domains (500-1000) into our development program. These domains may not all be "main street" properties, but through focused creation of; niche categories, topical connectivity, and hand-crafted content development, we will foster a community of domains not to be paralleled by other domain developers.
